Healthy Habits… or something like that.

Let’s face it. It’s Jan 3rd and my body’s feeling soft on the outside and lethargic on the inside. While it’s easy to blame the past two weeks of holiday drinking, eating and sleeping - that would be only half the truth. The fact is, I’m pretty much describing 10 months of the past year; and I bet I’m not the only one.

With much of the world saying good riddance to that terrible year, we’re looking ahead (albeit with some naiveté) to a better 2021. In that vein, I’m looking to change things up a bit. I won’t make any declarations that all of a sudden I’ll be hitting the gym (err… living room) three times a week but my body and my mind are seriously wanting a change.

So baby steps it is. First, I’m partaking in what probably half the planet is doing: dry January. And surprisingly (even to me), it’s an easy one. I’ve done dry Januarys before and my body does feel great - and doesn’t miss the alcohol. The hardest part in the past was when we’d be meeting up with friends or going to restaurants; but since that’s history (at least for the foreseeable future) the temptations to fall off the wagon also fall by the wayside.

You’re probably wondering, then what will happen to my “Cocktails in the Jungle” content? Nothing! In fact, it will get elevated as I’ll be adding some Mocktail recipes. We’re not savages, after all, and we could all use some tasty zero-proof fun once in a while. So keep your eye out for that starting this week.

Second, I’m getting back into a regular workout routine. It’s not anything huge, but because we’re now again on our normal schedules, it’s much easier to put things on the calendar that we can commit to. My workouts tend to be on the lower impact side: one day of yoga, another for for abs and core, a third day for arms, and then a day of running or walking. That’s kinda it - keeping it simple for now.

And finally, my diet’s been all over the place since the pandemic hit last spring. I surrounded myself with comfort foods, which meant lots of meat for protein. With a clean slate for 2021, I’ll begin adding back in more plant-based dishes and this will also be reflected in my Food and Wine section as well. And for you oenophiles who aren’t giving up on your favourite beverage, I will be adding wine-related content in February as the spring whites will start to pop up on our radar.

So that’s it - nothing earth shattering. Drinking ‘zero’, working out, and eating more healthy. A simple and common sense approach - who wouldn’t want that to start the year right?
